Established in 1984, Mississippi Sports Medicine’s Doctors James Manning, Gene Barrett, and Walter Shelton set out with a commitment to provide the utmost quality in sub-specialized orthopedic care with an emphasis on serving athletes all over the state of Mississippi.
In these 35 years, the practice has expanded to include 17 board-certified and fellowship-trained surgeons, all sub-specialized in the areas of adult total joint reconstruction, foot/ankle, hand/wrist, upper extremity sports and lower extremity sports, or spine. In addition, MSMOC has two of the most sought-after fellowship programs for both sports medicine and adult reconstruction in the country, and their surgeons are being recognized as leaders in their specialties and mastering the cutting-edge techniques in orthopedics. The nationally recognized and ACGME accredited sports medicine fellowship under the direction of Dr. Larry Field was founded in1994, and the nationally recognized adult reconstruction fellowship under the direction of Dr. Kerk Mehrle was founded in 2014. Both allow licensed orthopedic surgeons a yearlong training program to advance their skillset before they move on to their own practice.
Mississippi Sports Medicine shows no signs of slowing down. Now, in 2019, the newest state-of-the-art facility is set to open this summer in Flowood.
Located on Lakeland Drive, the 60,000-square-foot facility will include eight advanced operating rooms, three additional procedure rooms, four extended-stay 23-hour recovery rooms, full-service clinic, urgent care, physical therapy center, sports performance center and a pharmacy.
Dr. Graham Calvert is the 2019 managing partner and is looking forward to serving the state and patients in the upcoming year. He says, “The facility will enable us to continue to grow and provide quality care resulting in premium outcomes and cost savings for our patients. As a young athlete at Jackson Prep, I experienced first-hand the commitment Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center has to our community. It's an incredible experience now being an orthopedic spine surgeon participating in the continued growth of Mississippi's largest and most sub-specialized orthopedic group.”
The commitment to community and the patient remain core values of Mississippi Sports Medicine. The focus on quality care resulting in premium outcomes and cost-savings for patients is the foundation for all of the locations.
This new center in Flowood will replace the current surgery center located in Madison. The fully accredited Madison center opened four years ago and was the first outpatient center to be labeled a Center of Excellence for BlueCross BlueShield of Mississippi recognizing superior patient outcomes. The center was also the first in the state to perform outpatient total joint procedures, which is quickly becoming the standard of care around the country. The center has seen tremendous growth in the four years since it opened and has allowed MSMOC the privilege of further expanding outreach programs to more schools, working with coaches and athletes to ensure student athlete safety above all else.
The new Flowood location will allow for an expansion of services offered including robotics and computer-assisted surgery, while providing patients with a comfortable and convenient setting. Meredith Warf is the administrator of the Madison Physician Surgery Center and says, “Performing joint replacement and minimally invasive spine surgery with the assistance of computer navigation and robotics have provided a new standard of care for patient experience, with fewer complications allowing for quicker recoveries. The most advanced arthroscopy equipment in the integrated operating rooms will allow for training with our partnerships with high school health programs and bring in visiting surgeons wanting to train under our physicians and health care professionals cutting-edge techniques. “
By leveraging sub-specializations in orthopedics, the center will be more efficient and integrate into an all-in-one approach from clinic, imaging, surgery center, pharmacy, and therapy. It’s all about getting patients back to their active lifestyles faster.
The Flowood campus is an example of the forward-thinking Board of Directors, and it comes at a time when healthcare costs are continuing to rise, and employers and health insurance payers continue to look for alternative ways to reduce the costs that are typically associated with hospital services.
Glen Silverman, CEO of MSMOC adds, “We believe this trend of consumerism in the industry will continue, and the Flowood center represents Mississippi Sports Medicine’s long-term strategy of aligning more closely with these trends. The center has everything and more that a hospital offers without the overnight stays and with improved convenience and lower costs. Research, patient satisfaction, and our experience show that outpatient surgeries are more cost effective for patients, with lower infection rates and superior outcomes. Orthopedics and spine are expected to grow 35 percent in the outpatient setting over the next 10 years. Mississippi Sports Medicine is poised to continue to lead the charge in best practices in orthopedics and orthopedic fellowship training throughout the southeast.”
